He had kept their mother alive in their thoughts. Too alive, perhaps. He hadn’t realized it until the day he walked into his daughter’s room. She was putting together a tea party and had two extra seats.

“Hey, sweetie. Do I get to come to your party?”

She shook her head. “No, Daddy. There’s no room. Mommy is coming and bringing her friend.”

He looked at her in surprise. “Mommy can’t come, remember? She’s not here anymore.”

She glared at him. “She is too. She said you’d say that, but it’s not true. Mommy’s right there.” She pointed behind him.
