WonHundred Word Wednesdays

Was it a knock that had woken her? She sat up and listened quietly for several seconds.

There it was again. She climbed out of bed and tiptoed over to the window. There was no car outside, so whoever had come had walked.

She grabbed the baseball bat, taking a deep breath before opening the door. This wasn’t the first time she’d had to threaten someone to leave. The knock this time was more insistent. She stopped short, noticing the wisps of darkness coming from beneath the door. She thought she’d escaped, but that wasn’t the case. It was here.

Endless Cover Reveal

It's here!!

I'm thrilled to share my new book cover with you!

First the synopsis:

Sydney lives her nightmares every night. While other teenagers are dreaming of boys or traveling to exotic places, she must run a staircase with no beginning or no end, or a terrible debt will never be paid.
Just before her seventeenth birthday, the dreams change. She is no longer alone.
But her nightmares don’t end when she wakes up. Her stepmother and stepsisters threaten to ruin everything she holds dear. She must protect the secret that both she and her father have magic or they will use it to their advantage.
As Sydney learns to control her magic, what seemed impossible before—escaping her stepmother and those ever-present stairs—is now at her fingertips. When she learns the ultimate plan of her evil captor, Sydney must stop her at all costs, or she will forever lose her soul.

Ready for it?

Isn't it gorgeous? I'm so excited! Endless will be released on November 28th!

Author Assemblies Galore

Today was a crazy day of author assemblies. We started at Hidden Hollow where Laura Bastian and I took turns talking to 200-300 students about the benefits of reading and writing and then shared a snippet from her book, Guardians at the Gate.

Laura had the kids listening intently as she talked to them about reading. She told a story about learning something from a book that she didn't believe until she asked a doctor about it. She had the kids begging her to tell them what it was. She told them that before antibiotics, if anyone got a cut and it got infected, they'd use maggots to clean up the wound. It was absolutely perfect for the kids just before Halloween.

We gave away a few books to those that asked questions and then it was time for the students to go back to class.

From Hidden Hollow, we went to Frontier Middle School. This one was a little trickier because we only had about fifteen minutes with the groups of kids. We told them what our books were about and asked questions about writing and publishing in the first group. When the second group came, we changed up how we talked to them and answered questions while we had time. Then we told them if they had questions they could email us later and ask them. Everyone grabbed bookmarks before they left so they'd have our dress. I've had one person email me since then. I love it!

St. George Book Festival

This weekend I had an amazing time at the St. George Book Festival.

I was given the chance to teach a class on coming up with story ideas that work. I was so excited to teach the class.

Thursday I headed down with my brother-in-law and he dropped me off at my hotel room. After a delicious dinner at the Black Bear Diner, I went back to my room and edited up a storm. I'm working on edits for a few books right now, so I took full advantage of the silent room.

Did I say silent? I may have also watched several Halloween shows on Disney Channel while I was editing...

Friday morning I headed over to Dixie State University for a day of classes. I wrote tons of notes on characters, description, symbols, storyboarding, and on and on. The teachers were excellent and I was anxious to use what I'd learned in my own writing.

My class went well. I worried I wouldn't have anyone show up, but I had a good class size. They were great to work with and thanks to James Duckett, I got my powerpoint to work. My first one! I was very proud of it...

Anyway, we did a few prompts, where the class wrote a story from a first line I gave them. I had a few people share after time was up and I loved how diverse everyone's stories were. I just hope everyone was as happy with the class as I was...

After the last class of the day, we changed for the Charity Dinner that night at the Children's Museum. My sister-in-law came as my guest and it was a great chance to hang out, something we don't get to do often. Dinner was fabulous and we had a fun time talking to the other people at our table.

We listened to Mayor John Pike and his wife. They had great insight on reading. Afterwards, Dean Hughes spoke on the importance of books. I really enjoyed it. I talked to him about being in his class at BYU several years ago.

That night I edited until I fell asleep and woke up to the kids next door banging on the wall. It wasn't the wake up call I'd wanted, but I got to see a gorgeous sunrise on my way back from breakfast.

Saturday we had a book signing at the Children's Museum. We had a crowd that trickled in throughout the day and I sold a few books. It was so much fun. Up in the loft, they had performances by local students. The orchestra blew my mind!

I had so much fun during the week and I hope to do it again next year.

WonHundred Word Wednesdays

As she searched, her movements were frantic. No. This couldn’t be. She had done everything correctly. She’d read and reread the instructions countless times.

But something had gone horribly wrong. At first he smiled, but she noticed a pain behind his eyes that hadn’t been there before. Then he coughed and gasped before collapsing.

There. She found it and her breath caught. The pages had stuck together. She’d performed a curse of death.

Now see what everyone else came up with!

Tremonton Author Signing

I had the awesome opportunity to sign at the Tremonton author signing. Normally they do it at the library but because of the amount of authors coming, they chose to go to the Senior center so there would be plenty of room.

Jenna Eatough picked me up and headed north where we picked up Cindy Hogan. I got to see a beautiful area of Utah with tons of trees along I-84.

Getting together with other authors always makes for a great time. We didn't have a lot of people show up, but we were able to sign books for a few people and hang out with my friends.

What's the coolest part? I got to be in a crossword puzzle and word search!

After the signing, Jenna and I went to dinner and then went in to Provo to visit another author friend, Jess Smiley. He was having a book release at Dragon's Keep. It was a great day with great friends!

WonHundred Word Wednesdays

They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later. They say there’s one in every family. What they didn’t say was that learning what that secret was could cost me my life.

There was a magic that ran through my bloodline. One very powerful and very dark. It was smothered and destroyed a century ago. Or so they thought.

The document in front of me told me to beware of a descendant born on a full moon on the last day of July. I watched the letter turn to smoke. It was me.

Now see what everyone else came up with!

WonHundred Word Wednesdays

There was nothing left of the money except a few coins. It was gone. He looked at the cupboards that were once filled with food and sighed.

When he had inherited the millions of dollars from his grandmother, he thought it would last the rest of his life. But then the expenses started rolling in. Braces, clothing, and college for the kids. A new house that overlooked the lake he’d loved so much. And hospital bills. So many bills.

Now there was nothing left. He locked the door and shuffled toward his son’s car. This was no longer his home.

Now see what everyone else came up with!

WonHundred Word Wednesdays

He didn't understand what he'd done to her, but he would by the time she was finished. She’d waited for years for him to notice her. The day he asked her out was the best day of her life.

Or so she thought. He had treated her well when he took her to the dance. The one time she’d felt like a princess. It was later that night she found that he had only gone with her as a bet.

Her hopes had been dashed, her heart broken. She tightened the last few strings of the voodoo doll and smiled.
