The Ferrari stopped, and the tinted window opened to reveal an older, sophisticated woman. He backed up a step. The lessons he’d been taught as a child kicked in. Never talk to strangers.

“Excuse me, son. I’m looking for Catherine Skinner.”

“That’s … that’s my mom.” He took another step backward.

“Ah. Do you know where I can find her?”

“She’s busy.” His heart pounded in his chest. His mom was at home sick.

The woman smiled and held out a bag. “This is for her. No thanks needed.” 

He took the bag and looked inside. “But how—” She was gone.
