There was a legend about the well in the garden, but I didn't believe it. Magic was something made up. Something used to scare little kids.
I laughed as I looked down inside to try and catch my reflection. What I saw stopped me. It was an old book that sat in the bucket.
I looked around to see if anyone was watching, then turned the crank. The pulley protested, not having been used for decades. Once it was up high enough, I pulled the book out and immediately dropped it.
The book was alive, begging me to open it.
